The other day we brought cookies over to a neighbor for her birthday. The kids decided to hide behind her bushes and jump out singing happy birthday to surprise her. Excellent idea. Desired results.
That, in and of itself, was simply awesome. However, an even more amazing discovery happened as we were leaving and playing the "hide from mom game." Basically, that game involves me wondering aloud where my kids are and fretting about whether they were abducted by aliens or decided to run off with the wolves... while they giggle behind the bushes. Anyhow, it was during this game that Josiah discovered a smallish portion of a comet. I said that, "Yes, he could keep it" and add it to his collection of other more normal rocks. So it was that this comet became a favorite of Josiah for the next day or two. He, of course, brought it along to my mom's house one night and was showing it off to all who cared to see. That was when my older brother took notice of it. He made no motion to hold it as he examined it however, remarking, "Josiah that's no comet, it's a petrified dog turd." Oh. Right. Now, that really and truly was a revelation. Sadly, we parted quickly with our former comet, washed our hands and vowed to try another time to find a legitimate comet. Amazing.

It's Probably Blue
The other day Esther and I were frosting cookies. She picked up a cross shaped cookie to frost and asked me, "What's Jesus' favorite color?"
My absent-minded response was, "Well, I really don't know."
She said,"I know, I'll ask." At this point she bowed her head, folded her hands and said, "Dear God, what's your favorite color." There was a long pause. "Well, he didn't say anything. But, I think it's probably blue."
"Why is that?"
"Well he's kinda like a boy, and boys mostly like blue."

No More Toupee
Well if you remember from his first birthday, Ezra was definitely serious in his business attire. However, you may not have noticed his strikingly realistic toupee. Well, he decided it was time for a younger look and now is sporting a much more youthful doo. Hope you like it!

Santa Baby
There is a little history to this story. It's about Mimi and swearing. She doesn't really swear in the strict sense. This is simply because she doesn't have the ammunition. However, she has her own way of getting the message across.
One of her first swear phrases was "you bad girl ____." You simply insert the person's name in the blank. You can imagine the hilarious forms of this phrase, from the times she called the table she just ran into a "bad girl" to my personal favorite, "you bad girl Daddy." Eventually we had to outlaw the phrase. Then another one popped up in it's place: "I not like you." This too had to be outlawed and was soon replaced with the most amazing teeth gritted, angry little girl hiss of "I like you." Eventually, she gave up on this one herself because we either laughed at the irony or simply told her that we also liked her. Not the desired response.
The latest swear phrase is "you baby." She lovingly calls Ezra, "Ezra Baby" with no seeming contradiction. However, if you make her mad she will call you "you baby" with the full force of her almost three year old anger. Lately it has become something of a joke, even to her, to call someone, "you baby." She will lovingly say, "you baby, mommy" just to get a laugh. Well the other day we were listening to Christmas songs on the radio when Mimi piped up from the back seat. "Santa a baby. Hey mommy, Santa a baby." She started laughing and I realized how the song, "Santa Baby" sounds to her. Like a funny joke or name calling.
